EVAN GARCIA

Evan Garcia is a Reuters video journalist based in Houston, TX. He reports, shoots, writes and edits feature and breaking news stories in the southern region of the U.S. and beyond.

Tex

Garcia has experience shooting, editing and reporting broadcast news videos, covering a wide range of stories via photo and print, producing documentary films and teaching graduate and undergraduate-level journalism courses.

Previously, Garcia was a producer and reporter for WTTW, Chicago’s flagship PBS station, for 7 years. He was also an adjunct lecturer at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Garcia utilized a “one-man-band” workflow of shooting, editing and reporting video stories independently. He also reported on-camera and produced video stories collaboratively with a photographer and editor. As a photographer and reporter, Garcia covered several political and social events for the PBS station, from the 2016 Democratic and Republican National Conventions to Chicago’s civil unrest in the summer of 2020 following the death of George Floyd. His work has aired nationally on several major U.S. news networks.

In March 2020, Garcia started lecturing at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses focusing on multimedia reporting (photo, audio, video) and video journalism. He’s served as the creative advisor for several documentary films produced as final projects by Medill graduate students.

In the summer of 2015, Garcia produced, shot and edited the documentary “Equal Under God” in Uganda alongside Medill classmates Andersen Xia and Abigail Hodgson as part of their final graduate project. The film follows the efforts of Ogik Peter, a young man advocating for people with albinism and fighting the regional stigmas surrounding the skin condition. The story aired on WTTW – Chicago PBS in Jan. 2016.

Garcia received his master’s degree in video journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 2015. He graduated from the George Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in 2009, majoring in English and minoring in political science.

Born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Garcia has played guitar for more than 20 years and enjoys exploring new cities via bike. During the pandemic, he developed a passion for cooking – a burgeoning hobby rife with trial and error.
